Elucidation of the evolutionary relation between proteins is a central challenge in comparative genomics. Although homology, the common ancestry of two or more sequences, can be easily assessed through sequence alignment, many comparative genomics analysis require more precise knowledge about the evolutionary relation of such sequences, in particular, distinction of orthologs from paralogs. Using results from the OMA project (1), we introduce here the OMA Browser (2), a web-based tool enabling the exploration of orthologous relations over more than 290 complete genomes. An original feature of the tool, besides its large scope, is the possibility, in cases of N:M orthology, to obtain the set of orthologs with respect to a protein of interest.
